Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available today. Often referred to as breast enhancement, it improves the shape and enhances the size of women’s breasts using breast implants. At Pure Aesthetics we specialise in breast augmentation that gives a natural and beautiful result. Using the most advanced surgical techniques, dramatic or subtle changes can be made, depending on your personal goals.
Finding out what you really hope to achieve with breast augmentation is the key to getting the best possible result. Our surgeons feel it is very important to spend enough time in the first consultation to establish what you consider to be the ideal breast size and shape. We do this by studying your own physique and going through photographs of previous patients, talking over what you do and don’t like about each one. Trying the look of different implants inside your bra can also help show us what you hope to achieve.
Of course there is more to a beautiful augmentation than breast size. While planning the procedure our surgeons are careful to consider all the features of a beautiful breast, such as the slope down to the nipple, the curve from the nipple to the base of the breast, placement of the nipple, and the overall proportions of your body. Achieving minimal scarring is always a priority for our surgeons.
Your first appointment will take about 45 minutes. During the appointment your surgeon will examine you and discuss the surgical technique and the recovery. We feel it is very important that you are clear on all the issues associated with your surgery, and we encourage you to ask us about anything you are unsure of or would like clarified. Your surgeon will also discuss the possible risks of surgery, and how these would be managed; this allows you to make an informed decision. A second consultation is done closer to the surgery date, to ensure the right choices have been made for you.
Dr Merten performs breast augmentation surgery in fully accredited hospitals, with the assistance of a consultant anaesthetist. The surgery is usually done as “day surgery” and you go home the same day, although an overnight stay is recommended for some procedures.
As breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, there are no rebates from Medicare or health insurance, except in special circumstances.

A consultation with Dr Merten is the first step when you are considering surgery. You should frankly discuss your goals and expectations about looking and feeling better after surgery. You should always keep in mind that the desired result is improvement, not perfection.
Dr Merten usually performs breast augmentation as a “day surgery” procedure, so you go the same day. If desired or necessary, it can be done with an overnight. Dr Merten does all his surgery in fully accredited facilities for your safety.
You should discuss the details of your recovery with our staff.
There are currently several techniques for Augmentation Mammaplasty. An implant (usually silicone “cohesive gel”) is placed either behind the breast tissue or behind the pectoral muscle. The implant is inserted through a small incision either under the breast, around the nipple or in the armpit. Dr Merten will determine which approach would be most appropriate
You may have some bruising and swelling of the breasts for 2 or 3 weeks. Occasionally a capsule of scar tissue forms around the implant, which makes the breast feel firm. In addition an implant may become fixed in a slightly high or low position. There is no evidence that the implants currently in use cause breast cancer or other diseases, nor do breast implants interfere with breastfeeding. The potential risks and complications of the surgery will be discussed with you in detail at your preoperative consultations.
Although scars are the inevitable result of any surgery, we make every effort to keep them as inconspicuous as possible. The scars are usually just a few centimetres long and are located in such a way as to become less noticeable as they fade with time.
Emotional stability is the primary factor to be considered before any aesthetic surgery is performed. A “bigger bust” does not guarantee a new life or an end to all personal problems. It is mostly your mental attitude that determines a successful outcome. A breast augmentation can improve your appearance and renew your self-confidence; the rest is entirely up to you.
The goal of your surgery is to augment your breasts to a size that is in better proportion with your physique. Often a C to D cup size is obtained. Dr Merten will determine whether your expectations are achievable.
You should be able to resume your normal routine in 2-3 weeks although you may wait a little longer before undertaking strenuous exercise. Returning to work or your normal activities is an individual matter, and your Dr Merten and his staff will advise you.
