"Dr Steve Merten of Sydney's Pure Aesthetics says there are technologies now available for those wanting cosmetic procedures that didn't exist 10 years ago and the social acceptance of the procedure is far greater".
"The range of muscle relaxants and dermal fillers is much better today" he says. "And the demand for these types of non-invasive procedures will continue to grow. There has been a lot of research over the past decade into non-surgical techniques. Ten years ago the only things really available were facelifts and laser resurfacing. Now there are new lasers that actually work beneath the skin with less pain and better recovery times."
"And 10 years ago the people who did have facial rejuvenation procedures were in their 50s or olders. These days we are sometimes seeing people as young as 20 and more particularly in their 30s coming to get dermal filler and muscle relaxants, because the option is now available."
…..However, as with any procedure, risks are involved and research into the technique, operation and practitioner is recommended. "Any medical practitioner can do any procedure but surgery should really only done by specialists and plastic surgeons where possible," Dr Merten says. "Injections can be done by anybody as long as they [are] trained and the procedure is supervised by [a] doctor. There are plenty of places where a nurse administers an injection and no doctor is involved. The most risky area is lasers, which in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage burning the skin. It is always best to make sure the doctor is registered with the Australian Medical Board."…
