The Facts about Breast Augmentation
The decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery is an intensely personal one; This is one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery operations undertaken in Australia.
Dr Steve Merten, Plastic Surgeon, and Director of Pure Aesthetics says, ?Women decide to have this surgery for a number of reasons but the most common motivation is to correct an imbalance in size or adjust a sag in the breast and increase firmness.?
Dr Merten, who regularly performs breast augmentations in his 10 years in private practice, says that the real benefit of breast augmentation surgery is that the results are predictable and immediate. ?Usually there is some discomfort for the first few days and some minor bruising and swelling however, the healing process is usually very quick and relatively painless. With modern surgery and anaesthesia, we do this surgery as ?day surgery? so our patients can return to the comfort of their own home within hours of the surgery?
The procedure, which is also referred to as ?augmentation mammoplasty?, involves making an incision and placing an implant, usually made from silicone gel, into a pocket either behind the chest muscle, or between the muscle and the breast itself, although variations and combinations of these are sometimes done to suit a patients? individual anatomy. The most common site for the insertion, and where the final scar will be, is in the fold beneath the breast. this hides the scar well and it usually fades to a very subtle line..
Dr Merten, who specialises in Breast Augmentation, says, ?I consult every patient as an individual in order to understand their exact likes, dislikes and what they want the final outcome to be. I then advise them of what shape and size implants will work best with their frame; there are so many variations in what you can do that it?s really important to ?fit? the breasts to each woman?s body.?
Breast implants come in a range of textures, shapes, profiles and volumes to give patients and surgeons plenty of scope to find the perfect look.
One important factor to consider when deciding to go ahead with surgery is that you are dealing with a fully qualified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in this particular procedure.
A Plastic Surgeon is a recognised specialist surgeon who has successfully completed the intensive 4 year training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in Plastic Surgery
At the completion of the RACS training, which is a minimum of eight years on top of their medical degree, the doctor achieves the qualification award ? FRACS (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons).
Only qualified Plastic Surgeons can then become a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Plastic Surgeons have a broader and far more extensive range of surgical techniques and innovative solutions for difficult reconstructive problems. Plastic Surgeons also have a more comprehensive view of the human body, and are the pioneers and leaders in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
In Australia, many doctors who describe themselves as Cosmetic Surgeons are not Plastic Surgeons. Many of these doctors are not surgically trained so it is critical to check the credentials of the surgeon before you proceed.
Dr Merten is the Head of Plastic Surgery at Concord Hospital, a major teaching hospital in Sydney, Chairman of the NSW Chapter of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) , a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery at Macquarie University and the Australian School of Advanced Medicine and is Director of Pure Aesthetics, a Sydney-based cosmetic plastic surgery practice with an offices in the CBD and Concord. He provides a wide range of plastic surgical and cosmetic procedures to suit the needs of its clientele. Its reputation as one of Sydney?s most well established Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Clinic is built on a long history of satisfied patients.
