Breast enlargement, also called breast augmentation, is a type of cosmetic plastic surgery intended to make your breasts larger, fuller, or more attractive. The procedure may be performed in order to provide breast reconstruction or it can be performed for cosmetic reasons. There are some basics that you should be aware of before you consider breast enlargement surgery so that you can determine whether it is the right choice in your situation.

The Plastic Surgeon and the Surgical Procedure

It is important to carefully research and evaluate a cosmetic plastic surgeon before using them. Look for someone who has a minimum of 5-10 years of experience with the procedure to minimize the risk of complications or a poor outcome. The actual procedure takes approximately 1-2 hours and should be performed under general anaesthesic for your safety. The implant chosen is inserted in the desired place after the surgeon opens up a pocket for the implant either under or over the chest muscle.

Breast Implant Type

The two main breast implant types that can be used are saline and silicone. Many women choose silicone because they are less likely to pose a risk if the breast implant starts to leak. Further, silicone provides a more natural feel than saline implants.

Final Size and Shape

A big consideration when you are considering breast enlargement is the final size and shape that you want your breasts to be. The surgeon you have chosen to handle the cosmetic surgery can help advise you on these issues if you are not sure, especially if you want your new breasts to appear natural or you are not sure how much bigger you want to be. The plastic surgeon can make recommendations based on your specific case and personal preferences.

Incision Site and Implant Placement

When you have a breast enlargement the incision for inserting the breast implant may be made under your arm, under your breast, around your nipple, or even in your navel area. Each site has certain benefits and disadvantages. The breast implant may be placed either under or over your chest wall muscle. These decisions should be made in consultation with your surgeon.

Cost

The cost of breast enlargement surgery will usually run between $5,000 and $10,000, but the actual cost could be higher or lower depending on many factors. Where you live, the plastic surgeon performing the procedure, the breast implant type and size, hospital charges, and other variables will all be included in the final price that you pay.

Recovery

Breast enlargement is an invasive procedure and you will require some recovery time after the operation. For the first few days you will need to rest and take it easy. Your surgeon will usually provide pain medication, and you may need to wear a surgical bra for6 weeks. Your plastic surgeon will discuss any post-operative care and possible complications with you before you go home.
