Our team at Pure Aesthetics is proud to announce that Dr Steve Merten was recently named a 2019 PRS Best Paper Award recipient for co-authoring a paper last year in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr Merten won “BEST EMERGING AUTHOR PAPER,” which is awarded to those who have authored fewer than five papers for PRS. Dr Merten believes peer education and collaboration through publications like PRS is invaluable for the betterment of aesthetic medicine. He says being recognised by such a respected organisation is an honor.

The paper Dr Merten co-authored—titled, “Abdominoplasty Improves Low Back Pain and Urinary Incontinence”—details the benefits of abdominoplasty post pregnancy for issues such as lower back pain and urinary incontinence. Since Medicare stopped covering this procedure in January 2016, except for rare cases, there has been pressure for the organisation to bring back an item code for abdominoplasty. Dr Merten’s paper helps shine a light on the importance of the procedure for correcting specific medical problems that often result from pregnancy.
