Dermal FillersWhat are dermal fillers and can they help me look younger? Dermal fillers are products that are used in order to fill in certain areas that may be showing visible lines or wrinkles. These products have a variety of enhancement uses such as lip fillers, smoothing contours of the nose and enhancing cheekbones. According to Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Steve Merten dermal fillers are one of the most common, non-surgical cosmetic procedures requested, combined frequently with anti-wrinkle injections.

Dermal fillers have come a long way since their inception over 20 years ago, made from a refined form of bovine collagen. Nowadays, dermal fillers are mostly made from naturally occurring substances in the body, most commonly hyaluronic acid. The benefit of this is that allergic reactions are very minimal, if any.

Do Dermal Fillers Provide Permanent Results?

Whilst there are some dermal fillers on the market that are considered permanent, we do not recommend this due to greater risk of future complications. Most dermal fillers on the market provide temporary results, and depending on product and area treated, can last anywhere between 6-24 months. Your cosmetic surgeon can help you decide which dermal filler to use based on your age, situation, budget, and cosmetic preferences.

Will Dermal Fillers Drastically Improve My Appearance?

It is important to remember that a dermal filler is not a miracle cure for signs of aging. These products can create a big improvement and more youthful appearance in many cases but they can not make you look 20 if you are 50. It is important that you have realistic expectations about the improvements that can occur with these products. A qualified plastic surgeon or cosmetic physician can help you evaluate whether or not you can benefit from dermal filler injections, and how much of an improvement you can expect.

How Much Do These Cosmetic Procedures Cost?

How much should you expect to pay for dermal fillers? This is a common question asked, and the answer can vary widely. Typical costs can range from $700 to $1,200 for a single syringe, with the number of syringes required varying depending on what areas are being treated. During the consultation with the cosmetic surgeon the actual cost for the product type and amount that you will need should be discussed.

What Are The Risks and Possible Side Effects With Dermal Fillers?

Most patients who receive temporary dermal filler treatments will have few, if any side effects or complications. These products do come with certain risks and possible side effects though, and you should be aware of these before you have this type of cosmetic procedure performed. You may experience redness or tenderness at the site of the injection. Infection is also possible, but when the cosmetic procedure is performed in a sterile environment by an experienced cosmetic surgeon this risk is minimized. Other potential side effects can include bruising, swelling, and bumps or lumps under the skin, which usually disappear within a week of the treatment.
